Today, we’re joined by Professor Thomas J. Main to discuss his recently released book, The Rise of Illiberalism.

Main is a professor at the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College at the City University of New York, where he’s been researching and writing and teaching for more than 25 years. He’s written previously on the American alt-right movement, and he brings a lot of that prior experience with the subject matter to the fore of today’s book.

The book provides an insightful quantitative explanation of the size of illiberal movements and activity on the internet and an enlightening dive into the intellectual history which, sometimes accidentally, helped to birth these movements. Today, we’re going to talk about the book, illiberalism, how to defend liberalism, and how to restore its influence in society and protect liberal democracy.
